How to pick stocks ...
Sebastian Chong is a sought-after speaker at investment events.
1. Depth of experience: Sebastian Chong, founder and managing director, is a Fellow Certified Public Accountant (Singapore and Australia) and a former associate professor with the National University of Singapore (NUS) Business School. He holds a Master of Economics (Accounting) degree from the University of Sydney.
After graduating in 1971 with a Bachelor of Accountancy (Honours) from the University of Singapore, he commenced his auditing career in a Big Four accounting firm and was promoted to audit manager in 1977.
Sebastian has written 2 books on investing, and edited one.
He joined the NUS Business School in 1980 and spent the next 23 years in academia before retiring in 2003. All that time, Sebastian Chong was investing actively in equities. In fact, he has been doing so since the 1970s. Now, he is the managing director and key writer of stock analysis articles on www.shareowl.com and is also a very active participant in its forum. The website was launched in December 2005 and has chalked up 5.1 million hits up to early January 2010.
2. Popular website: Since Q1 of 2008, www.shareowl.com has been consistently ranked a Top 10 website based on market share of visits among all Singapore websites in the Hitwise Business and Finance - Business Information industry category. Besides running the website, Sebastian remains active in conducting courses and seminars in value investing and financial statement analysis for analysts, postgraduate students, and retail investors.
Sebastian actively posts his views on stocks and answers forumers' questions at www.shareowl.com
3. Discover and discuss stock pick ideas and strategies for 2010: The Singapore and other equities markets have recovered substantially from their bottoms seen in March 2009 when the Straits Times Index (STI) hit a low of 1,457 points. When this write-up was last updated on 15 January 2010, the STI had doubled to 2,908 points. It was easy to earn huge returns between March 2009 and mid-January 2010.
But the year 2010 will require lots more skill in stock picking and deciding when to take profits or cut losses on specific counters. Join hundreds of subscribers who have already benefited from their memberships of Shareowl. We have many loyal subscribers who have remain as paid members since we started charging (very reasonable) fees in July 2006.
4. Community of the ‘right’ people: A new analysis article on stock pick or strategy ideas is usually written by Sebastian himself and uploaded on a weekly basis. Most of the articles attract active discussion from members in the comment boxes provided. In addition the website has a central Forum that has permanent threads for all companies listed on SGX plus other threads that can be created by members on any topic that interest them.
Read the postings and make your own postings (if you wish) in the article discussions and the Forum. We have active participants from our membership ranging from novices to seasoned investors who are very well researched, up to date, astute and most importantly, generous in sharing their knowledge and views. Just about every day, Sebastian dives right in with forumers to join in the article discussions and forum discussions on specific companies and general market, economic and industry issues.
At Toa Payoh, the audience picked up insights from Sebastian on stocks such as Metro Holdings and GuocoLeisure and went on to make fat profits.
