I like Biosensors for it's recession proof heartstent and it's 2nd generation stents which have been gaining market shares. I have accumulate this company from 23 cts up to over 50 cts. But I have sold all when the chinese company bought over.

I still like this company & recently bought 20 lots.

Only a few people in this forum following / investing in |Biosensors? Me have a small holding, not too convinced about the stock mainly because of my lack of ability to understand the stent business. This is not selling fancy bread or operating aquariums.

The stock has been doing nicely. A market rally does lift a lot of boats. I don't think I will sell yet, as I am sitting on only 15% or so profit, which is also small potatoes given my small holding.

For those who are invested, can you share your views? Trading volume has shot higher but so has many other stocks' trading volume.

1 interesting development is the  issue of
S$300m in principal amount of 4.875% fixed rate notes. OCBC analyst highlighted that Biosensors had US$331.7m of net cash as at 30 Sep 2012 -- so it  is not in dire need of money and has sufficient resources for its daily operations
|and working capital.

Hence the funds raised would likely be
used for M&A. Usually, the market likes M^A ... so Biosensors could have a lot of upside  -- already w/o M&A ocbc has  S$1.69 fair value estimate on the stock. BIG will report its 3QFY13 results on 7
Feb post trading hours.
Maybe I can make a couple more $ to upgrade to  a touchscreen windows 8 laptop!

Biosensors International Group (BIG) announced that it did a share buyback yesterday. We understand that this is the first ever share buyback done by BIG since its IPO in May 2005. The transaction price was S$1.1127.

Although the amount is relatively small at 1.5m shares (just 0.09% of its total shares outstanding), we believe this sends a positive signal to investors and could set a precedent for future share buybacks.

The share buyback also makes a lot of sense, in our view, given BIG’s large net cash position of US$331.7m (as at 30 Sep 2012). It would also provide BIG with more flexibility as compared to paying out dividends since we believe that BIG is a growth company and would likely reinvest most of its proceeds into growing its business.

Maintain BUY and fair value estimate of S$1.69.

This move to commence a share buy back program indicates that the company thinks the stock is  trading at steep discount...

BioSensors reported the 2Q13 result today, with rev +28%. Drug-eluting stent (DES) sales remained strong in Europe with double-digit growth, despite the global market size seeing a single-digit decline. Licensing revenue from Terumo declined 29% YoY but it seems to be a temporary dip due to competing products launched in 1H12 but no more launches are expected in 2H12. The renewed contract term with Terumo is better than before as it has downside protection plus unlimited upside. Gross margin increased from 80.7% to 83.7% on a YoY basis. DES will account for a higher portion of total revenue, and CS expect the improvement in gross margin to be sustainable if it could continue the product mix changes. Globally, DES market continues to shrink. Boston Scientific’s DES rev saw a 24% YoY decline in 3Q12. Although Biosensors still has a much smaller market share than Abbott and Boston Scientific in the global mkt, it’s DES revenue continues to grow above 10%. Ratings as follow: CS maintains O/p with $1.80 TP. OCBC maintains Buy with $1.69 TP

CIMB this morning said:

Biosensors’ share price has taken a beating from earnings worries following news of |Terumo’s weak licensing fee to BIG. Management shrugged it off as a 2Q blip and reiterated its strong revenue guidance. 2Q/1HFY13 core net profit was broadly in line, at 23%/46% of our full-year forecasts and 20%/39% of consensus numbers.

|Nevertheless, we cut FY3/13 earnings and our SOP target price to reflect the risk of |weaker licensing income from Japan and potential price cuts in various countries.|This does not affect our Outperform call as product profitability remains strong and valuations are really palatable now. Tgt. S$1.79

Some funds are selling for a reason that has been around quite a while, so it's not new, and it's  mandatory stent price cuts directed by authorities in Japan,  India & China.

Yes you can see how things have hit Terumo Corp (Terumo), which licenses BIG’s drug-eluting stent technology in exchange for a royalty fee.

In results on Tuesday,  you can see its  drug eluting stent sales in Japan was felled by the National Health Insurance’s  official price cut (~15%) and increased competition from new product launches.

Excerpts from DBS Vickers' 14-page report on Singapore Strategy dated 17 Aug 2012.....

Biosensors remains a steal for a company with 30% earnings growth and strong competitive advantage.

Cordlife biz is about saving life. Compare to Insurance the insurance company will pay out if there is a claim but Cordlife will have more biz if there is a need for the cord blood. Cordlife generated net margins of 33%. Our Govt. also provide subsidies. See Cordlife price plan. http://www.cordlife.com/sg/en/price-plan
