heard of Cockroach Theory?
.... when a company reveals bad news to the public, there may be many more related negative events that have yet to be revealed. ... cos seeing one cockroach is usually evidence that there are many more that remain hidden.

BT Published January 18, 2013 Alleged fraud, dishonest acts at Kingsmen units By Wong Wei Kong print |email this article
The AC engaged E&Y to independently investigate on the matter - PHOTO : SPH
Kingsmen Creatives Ltd said Friday that Ernst & Young LLP (E&Y), the external auditors for the company, have submitted a confidential report dated Jan 11, 2013 to the Minister of Finance on the basis that E&Y has reasons to believe that serious offences involving fraud or dishonesty have been committed against two subsidiaries of the company.
The first instance concerns Kingsmen Beijing Co Ltd (KBJ). In the course of reviewing an internal risk review conducted on the group, the audit committee (AC) noted that a few finance employees of KBJ were involved in a misappropriation of KBJ's funds between 2009 and 2011. The misappropriation involved instances of invoices being paid twice, unrecorded cash payments and missing cash. The AC engaged E&Y to independently investigate on the matter. |

WHY YOU CANT GET A TAXI WHEN IT RAINS IN Singapore?? EVer wonder why?
Zafar Anjum | Oct. 3, 2012 | MIS ASIA It is common experience that when it rains, it is difficult to get a cab in Singapore-even when you try to call one in or use your smartphone app to book one. Why does it happen? What could be the reason behind it? Most people would think that this unavailability of taxis during rain is because of high demand for cab services. Well, Big Data has a very surprising answer for you, as astonishing as it was for researcher Oliver Senn. In 2011, Oliver Senn, a senior research engineer with the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART), spent five months working on a joint initiative to give real-time data and insights to citizens to help them improve their city, according to storage and Big Data solutions company EMC. EMC revealed this case study at an event in Singapore on Tuesday (2 October). When Senn was first given his assignment to compare two months of weather satellite data with 830 million GPS records of 80 million taxi trips, he was a little disappointed. "Everyone in Singapore knows it's impossible to get a taxi in a rainstorm," says Senn, "so I expected the data to basically confirm that assumption." As he sifted through the data related to a vast fleet of more than 16,000 taxicabs, a strange pattern emerged: it appeared that many taxis weren't moving during rainstorms. In fact, the GPS records showed that when it rained (a frequent occurrence in this tropical island state), many drivers pulled over and didn't pick up passengers at all. Senn confirmed his findings by sitting down with drivers. And what did he learn? He learned that the company owning most of the island's taxis would withhold S$1,000 (about US$800) from a driver's salary immediately after an accident until it was determined who was at fault. The process could take months, and the drivers had independently decided that it simply wasn't worth the risk of having their livelihood tangled up in bureaucracy for that long. So when it started raining, they simply pulled over and waited out the storm. This unexpected revelation, a direct result of the data study, stunned the company. Now, armed with this insight, they are strategising about how to fix a policy that obviously doesn't work for customers, drivers, or the parent company. Says Senn: "This was a powerful example of how one of the world's most data-driven countries is improving the lives of its citizens by providing scientists and researchers with access to that data."

Interesting!
[Believer 10-08-2012]:
Seen at National Day Parade Aug 2012.....
So you see, the lesson we can learn is : be immensely skeptical about rumours going viral on Twitter, the Internet, et. Stick to rational thinking. If anything had happened to LKY, the announcement would have been made promptly .....etc. U must know the way things work.
As in Value Investing, do your best to sieve our rumours. There are true value gems around among ....S-chips.

I am willing to pay $5m to the one who can produce a local born Singaporean Olympic game medal winner, any medal.
Can $5m produce an olympic medal winner of true local born Singaporean?
We waited 52 yrs, and 250K is small money for 52yrs wait. 52 yrs is definmitely worth much much more.
I believe we got to wait another 520 yrs. I am sorry if that is insulting, just put that question to PM Lee. Can you give us a local born Singaporean olympic medal winner within the next 20 yrs.?
We are willing to spend 100 m. We are a small nation of 3m. Just be honest, can we? |

Don't forget the rarity value : An Olympic gold has never been achieved by Singapore, therefore it will dangle a big carrot for it.
But the US, Russia.... they get a bagful of gold medals all the time. And their country isn't exactly getting richer by the day. |

From Yahoo!
If there's a medal for the highest cash payout for winning an Olympic gold, Singapore would top the charts.
According to a story by broadcaster CNBC, it said Italy was the most generous with a S$225,000 (USD 182,400) payout for gold, followed by Russia with S$167,000.
France rounded up the top 3 with an S$80,000 payout.
In contrast, US gold medal winners only pocket $31,000 for gold, S$18,000 for silver and S$12,000 for bronze.
However, the CNBC story obviously did not include Singapore.
Under the Multi-Million Dollar Awards Programme (MAP), Olympic gold medal champions in individual events stand to win S$ 1 million, S$500,000 for silver and S$250,000.
For example, Feng Tianwei's bronze medal victory in the women's single of the table-tennis will earn her a quarter of a million dollars.
However, she has to plough a mandatory 20 per cent back into the National Sports Association for future training and development. |

Thank you for the info, masteryourfinance. Are you sure his heart was functioning 20% only? This is a very important factor in one's life perspective. If I were him, I would live life very differently. |

Saw this posting on the Facebook by Dennis' brother, Steven Ng that Dennis donated regularly despite enjoying a simple lifestyle. In addition, he splurge generously on family members (bought a costly watch for him). It was revealed that Dennis had congenital heart defect since birth, but only detected at age 18.
Most commendable is his goal to improve the financial literacy level of Singaporeans. He continues to share relentlessly his financial knowledge, even though only 20% of his heart is functioning, according to his classmate.
Vivienne Quek: Dennis 是我的同学,与我们谈起他的抱负, 也淡淡地提起心脏只有20%的功用,更肯定地说要提升国人的理财知识。他一生虽短然暂尔却璀璨多彩。

That is one thing most of us fail to do, that is planning, like in stock, you have to have a plan to loss, a bad trade so u suffer less.
Likewise, we must have a plan to dies. Since we have to dies, might well face it and plan for it. Because when it happen, we cannot come back here to do correction. And the consequences of no plan to dies will rest fully with your loved ones. Go and write will. Let family know what they shd do to our body. What you want to do to yuor property, your stock, etc.
Mine, will be a sea burial, actually i always love the sea, I ask Roland Tay, and he said tthis was the cheapest, It is not that it was cheap, but my love for sea.
Go and do fast, because we do not know the hour nor the day. Think in advance if you loved your loved one, dont leave them without a plan.
If you fail to plan for death, then you will dies in vain.Death in itself is bad enough, no plan will make it even worse for your love ones.
If It have to be, it cannot be otherwise. I believe Denny have a good plan , so he can go in peace. and wait for me,
may u be well. |
